Rahnstadt Station

Whilst the battle was raging in the industrial area further south another action was taking place around Rahnstadt Station to pin German forces there and prevent them assisting the beleaguered troops further north.
The action did not go well for the Germans, we stopped playing on turn nine. The Germans had less than half their Battle Rating remaining and only one tank and a RSO with a mounted Pak40 with one round left to support the remains of the Volksgrenadier Platoon.
 In contrast the Soviets had over 75% of theirs remaining and although the SU100s had run out of ammunition they had done their job taking out two Panzer IVs leaving the three Shermans to mop up the remaining one.
I could easily blame orders not getting through and reinforcements not arriving in time but the truth is I commanded the defence totally ineptly🙄
In mitigation I did seem to spend more time on running the game than organising the defence.
Not many photos as the game did not have much movement and it was decided that the Germans would be unable to stand the final assault so we called a halt before time as mentioned above.

  1. Running a game combined with playing is a hard task. For me, concentrating on both is a task too many. Great looking game, though.

    1. Thank you Jonathan. Keeping track of both can be taxing especially with WWII games with all the technical advances involved.

  2. You suffered from poor command dice and tardy reinforcements I agree, but also I think you were somewhat bamboozled by my unusual tactic of sitting still and destroying your forces piecemeal. Most unlike my general up-and-at-em approach as a Russian commander. Perhaps you need to seek out a dedicated WWII player for the occasional extra game to fully enjoy your main period of interest? I do my best, but you know it's not really my period.

    1. Indeed it was most unlike you, in most games where you are defending you also end up attacking 🙂

  3. Looking at the German forces I think delay was all that could be achieved - plus extricating some of the more "quality" equipment to fight another day.

    1. Delay is usually the best they can hope for in 1945. I am not a good defensive player to be honest I much prefer to attack.

  4. Good looking game with a scenario that is believable. Defending against a proper assault is very difficult, a fighting retreat is the hardest assignment. As is umpire/player and record keeper. And, there is always the chance for a counter attack?

    1. Thank you Joe. I planned a counter attack with the PzIVs but by the time they turned up the Soviet SUs were there to destroy them.

  5. Nice to see the Sherman in there. I have just picked up a book about the Sherman in Soviet service and was surprised at the numbers involved.

  6. They didn't suffer new unit syndrome either🙂 Indeed they were quite numerous, the crews apparently liked them as they were more pleasant and comfortable to drive!
