Last week we gave the rules an outing, has I was relearning and checking any changes to the rules I did not really keep track of how the game played out but here are the few photos I did take together with a caption.
The Germans advance, they go off road as there is little cover on their approach road. They take up position behind low walls to cover the advance on their right of a flanking move.
Anticipating this British have sent a platoon to cover the flank, they call in mortar fire. The barrage combined with small arms fire halts the German flanking attack.
Well positioned in the centre and opposite flank the British negate any attempt by the Germans to secure the crossroads. A win for Dave and the British.
As can be expected I got a couple of things wrong but it prejudiced neither side. We both enjoyed the game and we will play another game next week.
Rather than run through the rules I would direct you to this YouTube video if you think they may be a set you may like to try. The one thing I particularly like though is that you can attempt to react to your enemy in their turn without having to put your units in overwatch this doing nothing in your turn. So for instance if you see the enemy moving in you do not have to sit there doing nothing until your turn, if fired on you can fire back or indeed fall back.
There is also a batch of rule run throughs on the NEG webpage here
Until next time take care and KBO.
Thanks for this Phil I’ll check out the video sometime , lovely looking game of course π
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt. The rules have late war sample orbats but on the Great Escape Games website there are ones for early war and specific ones that are usable for the new iteration.
DeleteStrangely I can't recall much of the minutia of the game. More worryingly nor of Tuesday's ECW game which I need to blog soon.
ReplyDeleteToo excited about the winπ Re the ECW, I believe I won π
DeleteSuper looking game Phil!
ReplyDeleteThank you Christopher. Hopefully a more pics and details in the report
DeleteLooks promising. Lovely game.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan. I think it has great potential here in OHQ for our 28mm games.
DeleteI will be interested in how your next few games go. I had Iron Cross, which I mostly liked, but though there were a couple of grey areas and things started carrying around multiple markers as they repeat activated. That didn't look too bad in 20mm, but in 10mm, I felt it overwhelmed the base.
ReplyDeleteThe rules have a short (too short to be useful) review in the latest WSS mag and at the end of that review, they say that they are looking at doing a 'Let's Play' article in the next issue (143)
I am looking forward to getting more games in. Markers, that's the one problem of no casualty removal systems. It's not so intrusive in 28mm and one can make more aesthetically pleasing markers in the scale.
DeleteI've played these in both versions, and the 1914 variant that I think started it. The rule mechanisms, specifically initiative, activation and reactions, are interesting and work well, but I've found the decisions by players over what to spend a command chit on next or to 'pass', and whether to react slow the game too much. A shame as I think the rules work well, I just want them to work faster.
ReplyDeleteNo dithering in our games, finger tapping or the pointy stick is in order π
DeleteThanks for the link Phill.
ReplyDeleteYour welcome George. It maybe a good antidote to your CoC woesπ
DeleteGood looking game Phil, not a ruleset I know anything about thanks for the youtube link, really good.
ReplyDeleteYour welcome Donnie. It is a set that was overshadowed by BA and CoC both of which had/have more vocal advocates.
DeleteYou were a very naughty boy Keith.
ReplyDeletePlayed a couple of times at the club a few years back but I don't really recall the specifics of either game. Haven't seen the latest version. We had a few issues with all the exceptions in v1, which seemed to work against the idea of a streamlined set of rules. Perhaps some of those now sorted out in v2.
ReplyDeleteThey are basically the same rules, there are 16 changes (these are listed in the website) the rules are layed out better and easier to understand. They won't be to everyone's liking it just depends how much detail you prefer in your games although it is easy to add more but wouldn't that be counter productive? Turning 71 last week I am leaning to less detail. Version two of CoC is great but I struggle with all the new options available though I will still play when in the mood for the challenge π
