I suggested a game of Midgard using my Arthurian Britons and Saxons at OHQ this week after returning from our respective holidays because it is a light hearted period to game and we needed a refresher on how the rules worked. I chose the scenario Battle in the Mist from the rule book as it sounded a fun and yet challenging game.
It is early morning and the land is covered in a thick mist. Despite this with visibility and the difficulties of command and control Aelle orders his Saxon horde onward to force the Britons into battle again.Similarly Artor commanding the Britons counter to the reported Saxon incursion does the same.
Aelle sends his hearth guard forward on the left, given the nature of the terrain on his right he assumes that is where the Britons will deploy their much vaunted cavalry which is usually led by the renown warlord Artor. Aelle has mounted a band of his warriors in an attempt to blunt the Britons cavalry advantage.
After a confused start due to the mist Aelle’s centre contingent move forward.
Briton skirmishers make contact with the Saxon centre, to their left both sides cavalry can sense the nearby presence of cavalry but the Saxons are wary of advancing as they are yet to see combat on horseback. The Britons are being simultaneously cautious not being sure of who they face not expecting to hear the sound and smell of horses.
On the other flank both sides have deployed there less experienced troops supported by skirmishers.
The mist suddenly clears, caution is thrown to the wind and battle is soon joined.
A splendid refresher game, despite the mist! Your collection is a joy to game with too. I liked the new Dunelm table mat to play over!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed our latest foray with Midgard, I can't guarantee the same when we play Chain of Command next outing😂
DeleteCool looking terrain, especially liked the patches of fog.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, glad you approve.
DeleteGood to see you fellas back at the gaming table!
ReplyDeleteMore to come I hope.
DeleteGreat looking game and report, I like the fog idea a lot.
ReplyDeleteThank you Donnie, the fig and scenario is all down to author James. I hope I did it justice.
DeleteSuper AAR and equally super looking game Phil!
ReplyDeleteThank you Christopher most kind.
DeleteA nice report and interesting battle Phil, lovely figures as always.
ReplyDeleteThank you George. The scenario played well and bought up some amusing moments
DeleteSplendid looking game and toys there as always Phil. I'm currently trying to read through the Mudgard rules myself, hoping to give both that and CoC2 a go soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul much appreciated. Dave is humouring me by playing a CoC2 game next time at OHQ! You never know I make convert him to Lard yet😂
DeleteSplendid! Only played Midgard twice (Trojan Wars) but find it easy to pick up and play. It's a sort of 'Lion Rampantesque' big battle set, but it does what it sets out to do. I'm currently expanding my HYW collection to run my own games soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mark. They certainly do what it says on the tin, haven't had a bad game yet. I look forward to your HYW outing.
ReplyDeleteA lovely collection Phil 👍 and we had Dark ages out this weekend as well
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, I shall look forward to reading of your DA bash.
DeleteA cracking looking and sounding game Phil…
ReplyDeleteI’ve only played Midgard once… But I found it very enjoyable.
Fighting in the mist looks an interesting problem/scenario… did it just affect visibility or were there other things at play…
All the best. Aly.
Thank you Aly. Visibility, shooting range, Heroes influence range all reduced and Command tests needed a four plus rather than three to pass.
