I had to use some Falange to bolster the Legion numbers, Spanish platoons are huge, it makes handling them a tad difficult too, well for me anyway.
It was an epic struggle with Comrade Dave's forces finally winning the day, although, had the game been part of a campaign I would probably have withdrawn earlier in proceedings. With hindsight knowing that the Republic could have bought, and did, a T26 to the party I should have left the Panzer 1 back at base, where it appears the anti-tank gun team decided to stay until it had to be deployed in a less than satisfactory way, but needs must and had it hit the T26 things may have been different. The what ifs of war eh.
Too engrossed in the game again to get many pictures, but here in no particular order are the few I took.
The Republicans Begin Their Assault |
Where Is The Pak36 When You Want It? |
The Legion Brace Themselves. |
He's Behind You! |
Its A Bit Late Now, Their Infantry Are Up! |
Dave has the decorators in so the next game will be at OHQ again, a Dark Ages set to is in order I think.
TTFN
Wonderful pictures, I am very impressed by your splendid terrain!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Phil. I enjoy doing terrain has much if not more than figures these days. I am working on some display boards for a customer at the moment and having a fine time doing them.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking game Phil...
ReplyDeleteAnd as should be the good guys won... ;-)
All the best. Aly
Thank you Aly, they always will when I am commanding the black hats I think.
DeleteGreat looking game as usual Phil!
ReplyDeleteSpanish sections are huge, c.15-18 men (although German ones in 1939 had 14 men), but the platoons are roughly the same size as WWII ones, due to only having 2 sections per platoon (Brits at 36, U.S. at 40, Germans at 45 etc).
Jim
Thank you Jim.
DeleteI had to "conscript" the Falange to man the extra for the mortar squads and the men attached to the HQ, was not sure what to do with these "extras" :~)
Blimey I'm slipping! I'd forgotten the mortar section.
DeleteFour years on from España I've naturally become wiser. They were a 'thing' on paper, but in reality a tad more doubtful. The Nationalists fielded them in company sections, as there weren't enough to go round at two per platoon.
If I'd written it today, I would probably suggest they were 'off-table' like U.S. 60mm mortars, or only included as support table options. CoC works with paper strength units however.
I've been promising a 'final' revision of España for a while, but Mr Clarke mentioned CoC 'Great War' to me and potentially those might to turn out to be a better fit for SCW.
I may try that next outing then.
DeleteYes Richard was trying his initial thoughts out on Great War CoC at Partizan last August, I just assumed it was a TMB demo, else I would have joined in a game.
Yes I was chatting about it with him briefly late in the day too. I know there's a few things in the pipe at TFL, so I'm not anticipating them this year tbh, but I've been wrong before.
DeleteGreat looking game sir!
ReplyDeleteThank you Michal.
DeleteA fine looking game and as ever a joy to play with your collection of figures and terrain. As to CoC, not to my taste at all, but your choice as I said yesterday. Not my period is it C20th really?
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it despite my choice of rule set. As for 20th C warfare, I think you know more than you let on ;~)
DeleteNice looking game, I would like to try CoC but note mr B’s comments above.
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt, as for CoC, more for the WWII afficinado than the casual player I suppose, though I dare say not all afficinados like them. Ones mans meat and all that.
DeleteLovely looking game.
ReplyDeleteThank you George. One of the prettier 20th century periods, though the savagery with which it was fought belies that.
DeleteGreat looking game, the terrain looks suitable dry and dusty. There's something about the SCW that appeals to me - I think it's the spirit of those standing up to the fascists. We're running a few CoC games locally and the lads seems to like it....I may have to give it a go now I've seen this.
ReplyDeleteThank you Stuart, it was the late Robin Hunts articles in Mil Mod that got me into SCW, why don’t we get articles like that anymore, and then the FAA/Hotspur figure range. You will like CoC, not an easy game to master, but worth the investment, I got them when first released and have only really just settled into them. I enjoy Bolt Action but always coming away feeling there is just that something missing.
ReplyDeleteWonderful looking game! We are looking to try CoC Espana after I get a couple more terrain pieces painted up for it.
ReplyDeleteChristopher
Thank you Christopher. I am sure you will enjoy the game.
DeleteThat‘s a truly wonderful looking game Phil! I‘m eagerly looking forward to my first game of CoC España myself.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nick. Enjoy your first game, I am planning my next one already, may have to paint more figures so it could be a while.
ReplyDeleteAgain, a visual delight!
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt.
DeleteLovely looking terrain and great troops and tanks! Nice to see the forces of reaction defeated!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain. Doubt they will triumph when I command them.
