Today saw the War of the Triple Alliance game postponed from last week take place, we would again be trying out Valour and Fortitude on my 6x4 table. The Paraguayans would have two brigades and the Coalition forces three brigades. We liked Norms idea of only having one Fate Card in hand at any one time, I amended this to two cards which allowed if you held two to discard one that was not useful and draw a different one in the Fate Phase.
Paraguayans on look out duty. The Coalition camp with Argentine and Uruguayan troops moving out.
Coalition troops deploy for action.
Coalition troops deploy for action.
Mounted and dismounted Paraguayan cavalry probe the Coalition flank.
The Paraguayans play a surprise attack Fate Card and charge the Argentinian lead battalion before it can form square! However with supporting fire from the Uruguayan battalion in square they force the enemy to retreat! However in the centre things are not going the Coalitions way a Brazilian battalion is routed but the brigades morale holds firm.
More success for the Argentine/Uruguay brigade the dismounted Paraguayan cavalry break, despite being shaken the supporting mounted cavalry hold.
Over on the Coalition left the Paraguayans surge forward and prepare to charge, the Brazilian battalion with supporting canister fire from the mountain battery will put paid to them. Err, no!
Back on the Coalition right the Argentines charge to no avail, the dice scores highlight the sorry tale.On the Coalition left the Paraguayans charge home and break the Brazilian battalion.
Back on the Coalition right the Argentines charge to no avail, the dice scores highlight the sorry tale.On the Coalition left the Paraguayans charge home and break the Brazilian battalion.
Back on the right the Argentine battalion loses the continued combat, with this it is all up for the Coalition a resounding victory for the Paraguayans.
The game lasted just over an hour and a half not bad we thought for a game where once close combat is joined battalions can easily break, the Coalition brigades were lucky in that they managed to pass a couple of Fortitude Tests along the way so the game may have been shorter. I shall have to dig more figures out from the pile of potential to paint for next time.
Until next time…………………………KBO
A splendidctable, marvellous figures, great company and the joy of a win! I should pass over Phil's dice luck, but, nah...😂🤣
ReplyDeleteA grand day indeed, the rules have lots to commend them, although they would be better with 3 or less to hit🙂
DeleteAlready picking out more reinforcements to paint - the sign of a very good game!
ReplyDeleteIt was a very inspiring game.
Delete“Pile of Potential”…you are forever the optimist! Great looking game and a quick decision too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan. Indeed I never look on a lead like as shameful at all.
DeleteNice to see the troops out Phil. Interested to see the Paraguayans getting the victory under the V&F rules despite have 2 Vs 3 brigades - there is promise there.
ReplyDeleteThank you Norm, the rules are very promising indeed. We will see how they fair with more troops on a bigger table next week over at GHQ.
DeleteSuper looking game, table and figures are superb. The rules seem to give a good game and a pretty quick one too, lot's to like there!
ReplyDeleteThank you Donnie. We are liking them so far, not sure they will supplant Black Powder entirely though.
DeleteA spectacular looking game there Phil, slightly less spectacular dice rolling it would seem! This collection seems to look better every time it comes out! Absolutely stunning work!
ReplyDeleteHaven't got around to trying the V&F rules out yet myself, but this inspires me to have a go.... Playing through fairly quickly they would probably work well for cub meetings, alongside Midgard.....
Thank you Paul. I had my reservations but pleased I put them aside and gave them a go.
DeleteLovely looking game Phil! I like that pile of potential rewording you used. Interesting how things change what used to be a pile of shame is now as you said a pile of potential when one considers how expensive things have become. I'm happy I have a closet full lead these days!:-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Christopher. A stock pile is a good idea these days, prices will not go down, postage will definitely increase and then with a lot of suppliers thinking of retirement one never knows if stuff will become unavailable or cross the pond, cue my Aventine stock pile, just in case it did not stop in the UK. Which I will undoubtedly add too looking at Adam’s new output🙂
ReplyDeleteFigures and terrain look sensational. Sounds like it was a double-quick, fast moving game, ticking that box if it is one to be ticked!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
Thank you James. Yup one and a half to two and half hours is just right for us.
DeleteCracking stuff Phil…
ReplyDeleteBeautiful toys and terrain… as always.
All the best. Aly
Thank you Aly, much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking game. Only play V&F once but found it flowed very well and was easy to pick up. Nice house rule for the fate cards too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mark. I did have doubts about them but they work well even in a smaller game than designed for, we found that having no limit on holding fate cards was to much for a small two player game.
DeleteA good looking game Phil, beautiful troops.
ReplyDeleteThank you George much appreciated.
